S-Layer is a Reaktor Ensemble which means you do need the full version of Reaktor by Native Instruments to be able to use the software.
At the time of creating this course, the full version of Reaktor is necessary, BUT Twisted Tools is in the process of upgrading all their software to be usable with the free version of Reaktor. So, keep an eye out for that update.
